A few months back, Microsoft has announced its plans to launch their personal digital assistant “Cortana” to Android and iOS platforms. All this while, we’ve only seen some unofficial leaks which gave a sneak peek of Cortana on Android. Finally, the Android beta version of Cortana has been officially announced by Microsoft and is available now available for US users. Cortana has gained good response from Windows users and this encouraged Microsoft to venture a cross-platform support.
Undoubtedly, Microsoft owns a majority share of the PC market but it’s still lagging a mile behind iOS and Android in mobile market. After a great struggle, Microsoft is slowly entering the mobile app market. If you’re a Windows mobile user or Windows 10 user, it’s likely that you’re familiar with Cortana and its features. Cortana for Android is no different, it offers the same functionality as the counterpart on PC. Cortana assists you with your daily mobile usage and web browsing but you should get the hang of it for first few days.
Cortana for Android goes live just at a button press and handles various tasks on your device. However, you might observe few differences on Cortana app compared to the native PC service. Some of the features were limited on Android as Cortana has limited permissions to all the features on Android as opposed to the Windows counterpart where it enjoys full system access. Moreover, you have to open the Cortana app to use it but Google Now offers “Always On” feature which is really useful.
Microsoft promises that the Cortana service will be rolled for other markets in the coming weeks. Since the app is still in beta phase, it may show some glitches and the user experience might be sluggish. We have used Cortana on our Android device for a while and we haven’t observer any sluggishness but it may vary with device. Anyway, all the bugs will be taken care of in the coming weeks.
